In December, the awesome new Photo Editor of Los Angeles Magazine, Amy Feitelberg, asked me to shoot a portrait. I was so excited. I love being about and about connecting with people on a one to one basis. Shooting lots of weddings these days is great, but hard work and a long days... shooting action, emotion, and many people in many lighting situations. I love flying by the seat of my pants, but sometimes, it's great to have a quiet, controlled time to create a fun portrait.

When I found out that it was at the Natural History Museum, I was even more excited. I love the Mammal Hall! I'm not a fan of hunting, but do love stuffed animals for some strange reason.. and, I am a fan of science. There's something so real and so surreal about those dioramas.

Every first Friday, a new band will play a show in the Mammal Hall at the Museum. I saw Wolfmother perform there last year while on a shoot. It's a cool vibe. Su Oh, the Program Director was a joy to photograph for this article. I can't wait to go back and visit.

Micah: Inquisitive About The Elevation

A few weeks ago, I was invited to photograph a mixed media project where Art Meets Fashion. I had the pleasure of working with the designers from The Elevation when there original photographer team member was unable to make it to the final shoot. It was madness, but a great shoot. I can't share the images till after the fashion show, but one image is going to run in San Diego Magazine next month and is also being displayed at the San Diego Airport. I'll share the image after it goes public :)

The Art Meets Fashion show is on the 28th April at the San Diego Airport. If you're in the area, check it out. I can't wait to see it all come together for these very talented designers and I'm honored that they asked me to contribute my talents to showcase their creativity.

Now, to the point of this particular story.... We were shooting the finished clothing on models in Valentine Viannay's (my dear friend and collaborating designer) San Diegian sun drenched back yard when her neighbor's daughter came over the hill to investigate our madness and my strobe lights flashing away.

Enter Micah: delicate, stealthy, peaceful. Clutched under one arm, two hand made dolls. One a pigtailed girl dolly, one a frog wearing a dress. More impressively and unexpected, embraced tightly but not too tight in the other arm, a white chicken, with an aura only slightly less peaceful than Micah's. Of course it's not everyday that you see a gorgeously propitious little girl in a prairie dress walk up to you with a pet chicken under wraps, so my attention was momentarily removed from the art couture and redirected to the gracious little dove and her sidekicks.

The orange tomatoes were awesome, I should have remembered their name..golden somthin tasty or other. Not sure why I didn't photograph the giant heirloom tomatoes, but they were really good as was the swiss chard and dinosaur kale.

The Madam Preston was my favorite wine in the flight.

It was fruity and crisp.

Sold only at the winery on Sundays, Prestons has their jug wine, Guadagni, available. It's a tasty hearty Burgundy wine.The bottle is filled and labeled on the spot, and you chat with the Prestons and nibble a few homemade olives. Anyone who really knows me, also knows that I'm an olive fiend. I had to hold back. One more glass of wine and that might not have been possible. My love of olives is something that I will forever share with my Uncle Richard and my Dad Robert. In addition to white and red cells, I have olive juice platelets in my blood.
I should have bought a jug for my next dinner party,
I'm kinda bummed that I didn't. I seem to be traveling north often, so I'll have to get one on the next journey.

Down the road from Preston's is Quivera. Jill, my friend at J&J Vineyard kept telling me I had to see the pigs. She saw them when the were first born. I think I would have loved to meet them then. As dirty as they were, they were so frickin cute, and really friendly. The only thing that kept me from climbing into the pen was the two giant momma pigs, (one of them a wild boar), and Erik, my voice of reason. I have video of them squealing and snorting and squeaking that I'm going to figure out how to edit together soon. I was trying to hold the 5D steady, but they were so funny, there's a little camera shake.
I understand why people have pet pigs.

This is the momma boar that started it all.

I was told that Quivera made this boar their logo and then she had babies.

She was suppose to by Christmas dinner, but dear Charlotte's little spider got her pregnant and she avoided the oven. Not sure what's going to happen to the vineyard mascot, but a little mousing around online seems to imply that some of the piggies are being honored as a tasty swine dinner at the

Healdsburg Hotel in March 2011.

Vincent: Ah, so by that rationale, if a pig had a better personality, he would cease to be a filthy animal. Is that true?
Jules : Well we'd have to be talkin' about one charming motherfuckin' pig. I mean he'd have to be ten times more charmin' than that Arnold on Green Acres, you know what I'm sayin'?

Valentine Viannay: The Parisian truck driver and bug lover

I visited my friend Valentine recently and she was so excited about her new old GMC truck and VW Bug. I totally understood why. Some of my fondest memories were paling around Baja with my dad in his turquoise Chevy pick up truck. (like most of the kids in Mexico, I too was driving at 10. Just barely peeking over the steering wheel.)

Valentine moved to San Diego from Paris about 9 years ago and started her own business called Painter Genie. She had bug back then with her Painter Genie logo on the side. She'd buzz from project to project with paint cans crammed in the back and scaffolding tied to the roof rack. She does commercial and residential decorative wall finishes, artisan plaster finishes, murals, (she can paint just about anything) and now she also creates custom silk screened fabrics...which are very cool!

I don't know how she finds the time, but she continues to work on her personal work as well. Check out her fine art site.

Bela, Bela, Bela.... Hugs upon arrival and then the wild, fearless blond wonder girl commences to climbing, sliding, swinging, scooting and chowing down. Thank goodness for a little technological distraction every now and then. Congrats to April and Billy on their newest addition to the family, Kala (shown in April's belly below). I can't wait to meet her. Since today is officially the last day of summer,(booo, but nearly every day in LA is, so it doesn't really bother me that much) perhaps a winter trip out east is in order. I love snow, winter skys and hot cocoa. See you sooner than later.

Merve & Evren's Wedding in Istanbul... a sneak peek

After an amazing week in Turkey in which my camera only left my eye for the graciously offered Turkish apple tea and a bit of sleep, I had the honor of photographing Merve & Evren's wedding. The ceremony was on June 27th in Istanbul, Turkey at the Marmara Esma Sultan which was majestically perched along the Bosphorus strait as if to welcome all the giant ships floating by. It was a beautiful wedding. Merve was absolutely, exquisitely, stunningly gorgeous in a dress that her sister designed with French Chantilly lace, blue tool and antique crystals from their mother's wedding gown. A beautiful omage to someting new, something borrowed, and something blue. Evren, handsome of course, managed to figure out his bow tie after a rushed sound check. He surprised the guests by performing with the Turkish Evil Maria band after dinner. Merve was right there by his side rocking out. They sang a rock duet to The Beatles song "I've Just Seen A Face." Straight from their hearts...touching us all. I might have teared up, but my trusty camera hid the evidence. ;) The full moon rose up across the water perfectly between the Bosphorus bridge spires and then gently veered to the right as If it knew that's where I needed it to be. The evening ended with a moonlit boat ride on the Bosphorus. Beautiful Istanbul, lovely friends, and wonderful memories. Cheers Merve & Evren!!!!

(M&E, If you guys aren't too exhausted, can you get married again? I had such an amazing time that I'd gladly repeat every moment)

Richard D’Amore, My Brother

"From my birth, until my manhood, my brother Richard was my guide and my hero. As we grew up we widened our adventures and challenged the world with our god given talents. Working different jobs, repairing, cooking, helping others along the way. Surviving, while being self-taught in the arts.
Our parents had little schooling, but taught us both to use the wisdom we were born with. For me this was my way of life, and still is. If I ran out of wisdom, I just asked my brother; he always had enough to give. We both like to finish what we start and we found that putting the finishing touches on things helps to make an art form.
I liked to call my brother Dick, and he called me Bob. He had beautiful hands and long fingers. He was a great flamenco guitarist, writer, and most of all, photographer. When he was young, he went to medical school for a while. His friends would say he had the best hands to be a fine surgeon. He did not finish school. He wanted other things in life. His eyes were open to the arts.
The camera was the eye opener he was looking for. With photography, his world began to get larger and larger. The things he saw behind the lens began to make stories, the stories that later became mysterious and poetic. His new art was to anticipate through the lens and create an image that showed the world exactly how he saw it, how he felt it. Photography was easy, but the more he learned, the harder it was. There were people who saw his work as a piece of beauty and conversation, kind of a fairy tale, a place to go into and play. I was proud of my brother, and I found myself also having a special talent with my camera. We were told to stay original. Fifteen years into our work, there were art shows and publications world wide."... "In spite of all the pressure on my brother, especially towards the end of his life, he was a man who could go into his darkroom, and when all the work was done, he had in his hand a piece of art worth a museum wall or the finest gallery in the world. My brother was a master of his art. I would not like to see his life’s work wasted. I want to help share his photography with the world were it belongs. I will do now what he can do no longer. My brother is my blood. His work is my blood." - Robert D’Amore

Today my Uncle Richard would have been a healthy, vibrant 70 year old artist. His birthday would have been quite a celebration and I know that all of you would have been there to toast him. In LA at the Venice studio with the the photo blessed walls with a slice of salami and the stinkiest of blue cheeses. In Paris the celebration might have been in a boisterous french cafe with glass upon glass of some amazing red wine, paired with an even stinkier piece of unpasteurized french cheese.

Not a day goes by that I don't think of him. I'm surrounded by his photographs, surrounded by my father's and almost daily, creating my own imagery that is a tribute to my family. It's in my blood. The thirst to explore and question. It's a gift, to document life, to create a story, to express a thought or a feeling onto paper and now share even faster via the web. My Uncle's artist statement says it perfectly...

“Culture is the lifeblood of peoples... It is what they are, their art, their food.. their personal grace... their soul. With images on paper, I extend to others the bouquet of a people... It is always a privilege to be offered a sample, a taste of another culture, to listen to the stories, the music, to feel the land, to smell the odors of the kitchen... to feel the wild sage on the skin... to have someone pray for you in a foreign tongue...”-Richard D'Amore

In honor of my Uncle Dickie, I raise my camera to the sky so that he may look down from above and bless my lens with light and wisdom, with courage and compassion, with humor, and with love. With every click of the shutter I am reminded how lucky I am and forever proud to be your niece and a D'Amore.

Easy Rider, Have a Great Trip

                                                                                                       Again, another great, eccentric artist  gone too soon. With 30 being the new 20 these days, that makes 74 the new 64, and that's just too young to have to call it quits. Rest in peace and  have a great trip Easy Rider.

 I wished that I had an opportunity to do a real portrait or Mr. Hopper instead of merely an event photo on the fly. None the less, I must admit that I was star stuck and embarrassed to ask..."Excuse me, Mr. Hopper, can I photograph you next to the Liechtenstein BMW art car?
In a similar fashion to rock ledgend photographer Jim Marshall passing away right before his exhibition at the Fahey Klein Gallery, Dennis was preparing for an Exhibition at MOCA Geffen Contemporary.  that will be open from 7/11/2010-09/26/10

"Dennis Hopper Double Standard" (named for his iconic 1961 photograph, pictured below) will be the first comprehensive survey of Hopper's artistic career to be mounted by a North American museum. The exhibition will feature approximately 200 works, ranging from an early painting from 1955 and photographs, sculpture, and assemblages from the 1960s to more recent large-scale billboard paintings and film installations. The curator? Julian Schnabel.-"-Media Bistro
In May it was announced that Hopper will be the subject of an upcoming biography by American writer Tom Folsom, Hopper: A Savage Journey to the Heart of the American Dream.

A couple weeks ago I had the privilege of visiting the great state of Oklahoma. Upon arrival I was greeted with a tornado warning. As terrifying and destructive as that might have been to experience, the Dorthy in me wanted to have a Wizard of Oz photo shoot and see a real tornado. (I know, wrong state, but close enough) The warnings remained simply warnings and Tornado Alley was calm aside from a little lightning. I was blessed with a magnificent sky to photograph. The following day was on it's best behavior and it was perfect weather for Oklahoma in May.

I'm processing these images right this minute and was overcome with cuteness, so I'm posting this photo... more to come from Josh's third birthday party on April 25th 2010.

I've been photographing Josh and his older brother Elija for three and a half years now. It's such an honor to document them growing. I photograph them every six months and each time I am amazed at how their little personalities get bigger and bigger.

Oh Mr. Jackson... you are for real.... (as I dork out and sing Outkast's "Mrs. Jackson" to myself)

What a personality for a pug dog. I photographed Jackson at Crissy Field in San Fransisco. I've never seen a pug so interested in fetching and I've never seen a pug swim before, so I had to meet him. Of course, I also wanted to steal him and take him home, but my camera bag wasn't big enough to smuggle him away in.

Snow Puppies!!!!

Cute Puppy Goodness!
I was working and playing in Mt. Rose up in Tahoe this past April and there was still snow. Melting slushy snow, but snow none the less. I was so happy to be up there. I thought January was the last time I would see snow this season. My heart was seeking an adventure, and the universe provided.

While wondering around Mt. Rose field waiting for the rest of the crew I saw these two adorable lab puppies running in the snow. My heart stopped at the site of them and I like a magnet, I was pulled towards their fluffy soft goodness to steal a hug, a few licks (from them to me, not me to them, just to clarify), and of course some puppy portraits.

Breathing Different Air

Last Thursday, I spent a dreamy day in Santa Barbara and it was so nice to leave the physic chaos of Los Angeles for a little while. It is so important to take time to change your scenery, change perspective....breath different air. I think sometimes it takes a physical change of location to create space for awareness and appreciation. I'm so grateful to be able to pursue my passion of creating images and capturing special moments for people.... and for sunny days.

Today was the first day of spring. New Years maybe the marker for the starting of a new calender, but I think that springtime's embrace of rebirth, renewal and regrowth is going to spring forward my new year.

The cherry blossoms looked especially delicious today. These beautiful, delicate flowers are an omen of good fortune, an emblem of love, affection and also represent spring.

Winter Road Trippin to Montana

Going though the archives.... I was reminded of my road trip from Los Angeles to Stevensville, Montana to spend the holiday in the snow with my Godmother Yana.
There was almost gun play at the Rustic Inn. Lots of large animals...unfortunately, dead, stuffed and in plastic form. We drove through part of Zion, dwarfed by giant red mountains. There was a snow storm in Idaho which we almost drove off a cliff but Super Yana saved the day with her superior driving skills. Laura, Yana's cousin had a near death experience and then kept on truckin. Note: Hiking in the snow can be dangerous. I was almost proposed to by a hunky, tattooed, shirtless drunk accompanied by his equally drunk toothless Uncle (we stumbled upon them on their fourth day of drinking at the Rainbow Bar). We ate good food, baked a couple pies, relaxed, laughed alot....alot! We spent quality time with REAL people and our girl Shirley kept us laughing on the road. What more could a girl ask for Christmas?
